Dynamax mechanics shakes up the VGC. The new format with Sword and Shield brings a lot of variety in the young metagame. Four experienced players talked about their thoughts of the 2020 Championship Season during the Pokémon Regional Championships in Bochum.

Hippolyte Bernard (Winner of Regional Chamionships Cologne 2019)

How are your first impressions about the new VGC format?

I think it is very good and very different than before, of course because of the Dynamax as well. You don‘t have the same win conditions all the time.

How is Dynamaxing changing the game?

It‘s ok for the game. The mechanics still isn‘t explored completely. But it‘s a big threat to calculate in. A Dynamax Pokémon is very hard to K.o. in one hit. This changed everything.

Which Dynamax Pokémon are the best and why?

There are a lot of really good Dynamax Pokémon. In 1vs1 Pikachu and Snorlax are the best. In 2vs2 there are too much strong choices.

Which Pokémon is mandatory for every team?

Nothing in particular. You have a lot of choices to play with different strategies. I like Togekiss, it is very bulky and as a Dynamax with weakness policy it is a very good choice.

Is there an annoying Pokémon to play against?

Not actually is Togekiss but you need to be prepared for this Pokémon.

Who is winning the Regional Championship in Bochum and why?

My friend Edward could be very good this weekend. He helped me a lot to prepare myself for this event. I owe him a lot. Otherwise I would like to see Alex winning, he was the Runner up in Cologne during the last Regional Championship. He deserves a title.

Markus Stadter (Winner German National Championship Bochum 2014)

How are your first impressions about the new VGC format?

The game is very cool and makes a lot of fun. This new format is completely different than the last one. Of course the new introduced mechanic Dynamax makes a huge difference as well.

How is Dynamaxing changing the game?

It is very good for VGC. Now every Pokemon can change into a strong version in a second, can take a lot of damage and is dealing a lot at the same time. So the dynamics of the game change a lot because of that. You have to be very concious about your opponents Dynamax, when it will be released. This option makes the game very versitile, strategies are spreaded widely and make the scene very hard to predict. I would love to participate with 20 Pokémon because there are so many possibilities.

Players need to be very careful about the timing when a Dynamax is coming in.

Which Dynamax Pokémon are the best and why?

Togekiss for example is being played a lot because it is very flexible. During the last format it was more a supporter but with the Dynamax it can be a very good offensive weapon as well. Most of the time you can‘t predict, which strategy will it be with Togekiss. But I for example prefer Duraludon. He is doing pretty good against Togekiss. You can double the attack and the HP, which is very helpful

Which Pokémon is mandatory for every team?

There is no mandatory Pokémon, but we see a lot of favorites. Even if you don‘t have five of the predicted best Pokémon you still can create a strong team.

Is there an annoying Pokémon to play against?

Excadrill is bit of a bad match up against Duraludon. But otherwise there is nothing extremely annoying.

Who is winning the Regional Championship in Bochum and why?

A friend of mine is very good and I believe in him, even though he lost the first round. I think the offensive way for this tournament would be the route to go. I would be surprised if anyone would already have a very good defensive team, which is able to cover every aspect of the game. That‘s why I think an offensive team will win this tournament.

Sebastian Krüger (VGC Veteran since day 1)

How are your first impressions about the new VGC format?

In my opinion it is the best VGC format since the existance of VGC. This format is so versitile. You got a lot more of viable Pokémon than before in different VGC formats who aren‘t strictly set in their attacks, except for a few.

How is Dynamaxing changing the game?

It is extremely good for the VGC and healthy for the game because you have tons of possibilities. You don‘t always go on the offensive side. Playing defensive will result in really helpful buffs. Dynamax allows you just a lot of strategies. Weakness Policy for example is very helpful for almost every Pokémon.

Which Dynamax Pokémon are the best and why?

The best Dynamax in my opinion is Gyarados. Ecpecially with Power Whip he is able to counter his biggest threats. You‘ve got the speed boost because of the flying type in addition. My Pokémon of choice would be Togekiss, because of the Dynamax, it can be played with weakness policy and has two completely different sets to be played with.

Which Pokémon is mandatory for every team?

Dragapult is played a lot. It is basically thrown in every team. The move pool is big, it is the fastest Pokémon from the Galar region. But still you can‘t say that there are mandatory Pokémon because of the variety of good team compositions.

Is there an annoying Pokémon to play against?

Maybe I would say Togekiss because of the defensive possibility and the different setup options. Spotlight makes it extremely dangerous as well.

Who is winning the Regional Championship in Bochum and why?

I don‘t have a big favorite as a name at the moment. Here you have top players from places all of Europe and the meta is extremely new right now. But I think a mediocre defensive deck will win the tournament. Some hyper agressive builds might top cut, but I guess the best defense will win the title.

Alex Gomez (Runner up of Regional Chamionships Cologne 2019)

How are your first impressions about the new VGC format?

I wanted to prepare for the tournament. But it was very difficult to be ready in time. Established archetypes will be set in a few month. But I like the mechanics, I like Dynamax.

How is Dynamaxing changing the game?

You can Dynamax every Pokémon you want. That‘s why it is hard to predict and addapt the game. But still it is very interesting. If you know when your opponent is going to Dynamax and you can save yours for the late game, you can have the advantage.

Which Dynamax Pokémon are the best and why?

There are many. I think Rhyperior, Dragapult, Togekiss as well. My favorite so far is Rhyperior, but it‘s one of the most used Dynamax.

Which Pokémon is mandatory for every team?

Not really. Dragapult and Togekiss are really solid choices. Rhyperior in my opinion, as well as Charizard and Arkanine can be really good. But that doesn‘t mean you have to play them. Dynamax opens a lot of new strategies.

Is there an annoying Pokémon to play against?

Snorlax can be annoying. But you can counter everything with the right strategy.

Who is winning the Regional Championship in Bochum and why?

I don‘t have favorites for this tournament. Because of the new format we probably see a lot of new good players.
